Story of a Classic: 1981 Cadillac Eldorado
A Generational Love of Cars
As winter’s chill begins to thaw, those in the collector car community start dreaming of long spring drives in their cherished vintage vehicles. In this edition of our Story of a Classic series, we meet a collector named Joseph, who acquired a sandstone-colored 1981 Cadillac Eldorado. An aficionado of GM luxury cars, Joseph instantly fell in love with this rare find—boasting 30,000 original miles and functioning 368 ‘8-6-4’ fuel-injected variable displacement technology.
Collectors are drawn to the 1981 Cadillac Eldorado for its classic styling, luxurious features, and the introduction of Cadillac’s innovative 8-6-4 engine. While some deem it the ‘worst engine’ of 1981, Joseph finds it deactivates cylinders smoothly and offers a dream-like ride. “The interior has plush corduroy-padded seats in Medium Doeskin, and they are very comfortable. This is my 15th Collector Vehicle, and it is insured by Berkley One,” he said. Read on to discover how this car enthusiast continues his generational love of automobiles.

Take a peek under the hood of Joseph’s 1981 Cadillac Eldorado
Joseph: This 1981 Cadillac Eldorado is my 15th classic vehicle. I have collected classic vehicles for the past 30 years and my interests are with GM luxury (Cadillac and Buick). For me, the interest is generational and since I grew up in the 1970’s, I favor the 70’s and 80’s eras. This was a time where GM produced the most luxurious vehicles, and those cars were built to last. Although vehicles with better gas efficiency were on the rise, GM’s top 5 remained faithful to buyers who wanted comfort and durability.
Q: What is your favorite element of being a part of the collector vehicle community?
Joseph: My favorite part of being part of the collector vehicle community is the culture. When attending car shows or swap meets, you can always meet new people and share stories about their experiences. Belonging to this community provides a sense of comfort because you know that someone else understands your love of collector cars. It’s also a great opportunity to share and obtain information about great mechanics as well as needed parts.

Q: What is the story behind how you obtained/restored the vehicle being featured?
Joseph: I found this vehicle online in a Cadillac forum. The vehicle was in Staten Island, and it was an easy drive to meet the owner, test drive, and have it checked out by a mechanic. Online sites along with car shows are great resources for locating your next collector vehicle.
