The Car:

The 1967 Toyota GT, also known as the 2000GT, is praised for its engineering excellence. Exclusive to the Japanese Toyota Retail channel, it’s hard to talk about this car without mentioning its groundbreaking design. The sleek grand tourer featured a lightweight aluminum body, aerodynamic curves, and pop-up headlights. It also boasted a 2.0-liter inline-six engine co-developed with Yamaha. That engine produced 150 horsepower— remarkable for its time. Rare and highly sought after, the 2000GT solidified Toyota’s reputation as a global competitor in high-performance car manufacturing.

The Collector:

The 1967 Toyota 2000GT holds a special place in automotive history as Japan’s first true supercar. Co-developed with Yamaha, it showcased Japan’s ability to compete with European luxury sports car makers like Porsche and Jaguar. It was also made famous by its appearance in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, which was filmed in Japan. It’s one of the rarest and most collectible vehicles of its era; its production run was extremely limited, with less than 350 units built between 1967 and 1970.

The Love:

I love the simple style of this car and so do many collectors. They also admire its rarity, design, and history. The GT offered a sophisticated driving experience with a five-speed manual transmission, ensuring sharp handling and performance. Inside, the cabin exuded luxury with rosewood trim and leather upholstery. Add its cinematic debut in You Only Live Twice and you can understand its status as a cultural icon.
