George’s 1959 Porsche 356 Convertible D Silver

Behind every collector car is a story and that narrative is often as compelling as the vehicle itself. Our latest ‘Story of a Classic’ tells the story of George from Illinois and his rare 1959 Porsche 356. Want to tell the story behind your Classic car? We’re here to share, celebrate and protect the adventure of owning a collector vehicle.

Q: How did you get started collecting classic vehicles?

George: Since college I have always owned a sport car. My first car was a TR3 and I have owned several 356’s prior to the car I have now.

Q: What draws you to Porsche 356’s specifically?

George: I have always liked the design of the car. These cars were handmade and to me the design is a beautiful piece of art.

Q: What is the story behind how you obtained this specific Porsche 356?

George: A friend at a Christmas party told me there was a widow who had a 356 Porsche for over a year after her husband passed. This vehicle was his pride and joy and she felt obligated to keep it for at least a year. That year was ending, and she did not want to keep it through the winter. I called her and bought the car sight unseen.

Q: What is the most interesting thing about your 1959 Porsche 356 Convertible D Silver?

George: They only made 1,331 Convertible D’s. Today they estimate there are only half of them still in existence. The car sold originally for $3,019. My grandkids call it a car without a top and I love taking them for rides through the country roads around my home.
