1976 Ferrari 308

Instantly recognizable among those in the hobby, the Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS cars were produced from 1975-1985 and are loved for their history as well as for their timeless Italian engineering. As Berkley One Classics celebrates the big 5-0, we’re hosting an exciting virtual car show for collectors and enthusiasts alike. We’ll share our love of classic cars by spotlighting 50 cars for 50 years that have been chosen and beloved by our employees. The Car:

The Ferrari 308 GTB/GTS was produced from 1975-1985. Styled by the renowned Pininfarina, the 308 showcased sleek Italian design and a distinctive 2.9L V8 engine. 1976 to 1979 models used a carbureted fuel system, and later upgraded to fuel injection in 1980 for improved emissions control. Early models featured lightweight fiberglass bodies, transitioning to metal in 1977 to enhance durability and refinement. The 308 also stood out with its advanced metric wheels, fitted with Michelin TRX tires — an innovation popular among other high-performance brands like BMW and Ford’s Mustang (as well as Mercury Capri). Producing between 237-252 horsepower, the 2.9L V8 was paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and vented disc brakes, making the 308 a thrilling, well-balanced sports car revered for its agility and style.

The Collector:

Collectors are captivated by the 308 not only for its timeless design but also for its status as an icon of Italian engineering and craftsmanship. Pininfarina’s sleek styling gives it a uniquely elegant, aggressive look. It’s instantly recognizable among classic car enthusiasts. This model’s balance of style, historical significance, and driving appeal makes it a must-have for collectors seeking a piece of automotive history.

The Love:

This car is just iconic. Many people dreamed of owning one, and I had posters of this vehicle in the 1980’s (no doubt from its part in pop culture). The car was included on the television series Magnum P.I. from 1980-1988. This car was driven regularly on the series by actor Tom Selleck and was also featured in National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983). There, it was driven by actress Christie Brinkley.
