The Car

This iconic vehicle became a symbol of American motorcycling culture during and after World War II. Renowned for its distinctive large, skirted fenders, the 1940s Indian Chief Motorcycle has a unique look coupled with a powerful V-twin engine, which provides a smooth and exhilarating ride. The bike also features a classic teardrop gas tank and a sprung seat for comfort. The Chief is powered by a 74 cubic inch (1,210 cc) V-twin engine enabling a top speed of 85 mph (137 km/h). The flathead engine produced approximately 40 horsepower and was mated to a 3-speed hand-shifted transmission with a foot-operated clutch.

The Collector

The 1940s Indian Chief Motorcycle was a flagship model for the Indian Motorcycle Company. With its distinctive style, the bike was wildly popular for its era. But despite this, production was halted in 1953 as the company struggled to compete with other manufacturers, leading to the closure of the original Indian Motorcycle Company that same year. Its rich history and the craftsmanship of the era, combined with its rarity, make it a highly sought-after piece of motorcycle heritage.

The Love

Collectors love the 1940s Indian Chief Motorcycle for its iconic design, featuring signature skirted fenders and a powerful V-twin engine, which captures the classic American motorcycle aesthetic. The 1940s Indian Chief Motorcycle has also appeared in pop culture, often symbolizing freedom and rebellion, most notably in movies like Easy Rider, starring Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Jack Nicholson. Its classic design has also made it a favorite in various vintage-themed shows and advertisements, reinforcing its status as an American icon.
