The Car

The Jeep CJ5 is beloved by collectors for its rugged, off-road capabilities and its simple, utilitarian design. To many, it embodied a general spirit of adventure. Manufactured by Jeep in the United States, it showcases a 2-door open body type and manual 3-speed transmission. The CJ5 weighs 2,420 pounds and is capable of a top speed of 85 mph. Its military origins and durable build have made it a favorite with outdoor enthusiasts.

The Collector

The Jeep CJ, which was first introduced in the 1940’s, evolved from its military predecessor, the Willys MB (designed for use in World War II). By 1967, the CJ had become a civilian favorite, maintaining its tough, go-anywhere capability while incorporating more comfort features for everyday driving. Production of the CJ ran from 1945 through 1986. The Jeep marque became known for its engineering leadership in 4×4 drive technology, becoming America’s rugged outdoor brand.

The Love

My family owned a highly modified CJ7 when I was growing up. It had a big lift kit as well as large tires with chrome rims and exhaust headers. Sitting high up, the roll bar became important because it gave you an added feeling of safety. Since my childhood, I’ve always been interested in Jeeps.

I like the ruggedness and overall appearance — they always look like they can climb straight up a wall.

I’ve now had the chance to off-road in a few Jeeps over the years, and they were an absolute blast. I prefer the older stock CJ’s, and I currently own a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which is fun for mild off-roading adventures.
