Story of a Classic: 1957 Chevrolet 3200

Replicating Fond Memories: Doug’s 1957 Chevrolet Pickup

As the long days of summer start to wane, it’s time to hit the road for those last exciting drives. But before you step on the gas, catch the incredible stories behind our clients’ classic vehicles. In this edition of our Story of a Classic series, we meet a collector named Doug who purchased a red 1957 Chevrolet Pickup. Aptly named Ruby, the car instantly found a place in his heart and garage as it reminded him of his grandfather’s beloved pickup.

Collectors are often fond of the 1957 Chevrolet pickup for its timeless design. With its 8-ft bed and open-grille styling, in many ways it embodies 1950’s Americana. Its durability also makes it a great choice for collectors who appreciate rugged, well-built trucks. Read on to learn how the classic Chevy helped Doug remember fond memories and create new ones.

Q: What is the story behind how you obtained and/or restored the vehicle being featured?

Doug: I acquired the truck years ago. Ruby is a former Oregon farm truck, restored by a rural MN mechanic in the 1980’s. My late grandfather had a similar pickup when he co-owned an Illinois gas station, bulk fuel plant, and home heating oil business.

When we were youngsters in the 1960’s, my brothers and I would ride in a truck like Ruby to make fuel deliveries and just be together.

I desired to replicate those fond memories with this purchase. I saw it as a way to keep my grandfather’s presence alive and share with others those happiest times of my life from long ago.

Q: Have you owned any other collector vehicles? And what is the weirdest, funniest, or most interesting comment or question you’ve gotten about the vehicle being featured?

Doug: I also owned a 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air 2-Dr hardtop. And when it comes to interesting moments with my current truck, often when I stop with Ruby, complete strangers will come up to me. They’ll compliment her looks and share fond memories of an old truck from their past. I love pausing to listen, smile, laugh and just relive the past with them.
